The Contemporary Retro Grand Kemang Hotel
Published 04 February 2007
Post-clubbers now have a new old address in which to crash: the partly refurbished Grand Kemang hotel. FRV inspects the four-star hotel sited in the most stylish and swankiest part of Jakarta.
For more than three decades, the hotel has been the main address to do business and enjoy leisure in Kemang. Originally built as Ginza Inn in 1974, the venue then went through a change to Kemang Hotel. Enlarged to a 205-room accommodation,Kemang Hotel was almost late in keeing up with the fast growing trend in the neighbourhood. The salvation then came when Recapital Asset Management took over the hotel in 2005 and then started to renovate, revamp, and re-brand it into the Grand Kemang.
The renovation did not happen overnight, nor even over a year. Until January 2006, while the exterior has been totally changed into a new contemporary style, the interior of the rooms are still undergoing a transformation phase. Inside the hip, trendy, funky, and colorful façade are bedrooms with a legacy from the past – TV set, control bedside table, mini fridge, cabinets are all in (as mentioned in the website) “retro” style. Internet technology has stepped into no further than the common areas, and does not come within the room rates.
The lounge is filled with super comfortable couches and big round sofas for gatherings with friends. The Dining Room is comfortable, overlooking the swimming pool. The bar by the pool serves evening cocktails. Grand Kemang also has a ballroom to host up to 1,200 guests, and meeting rooms for 10 to 100 persons. Mondrian-influenced paintings by Denon Klisinsky are displayed to instil the “contemporary” feeling.
Bedrooms are available for short or long-term stay, ranging from Superior (USD 110++) to Presidential Suite (USD 400++). Residence rooms vary from one-bedroom (USD 250++) to three-bedroom suite (USD 500++).
Needless to say the Grand Kemang’s primary selling point is its prime location. Post-clubbers who find good food in the hip 24-hour Dim Sum Festival can now just cross the narrow street, and find a stylish place to crash. Families may enjoy weekends with their kids splashing around the swimming pool. Though the renovation is not totally completed, occupancy is quite high. The Kemang area will be even better when this iconic hotel finishes its final touch. God speed.
